During the drive, or at the end of the test, the examiner may ask you to pull over and leave the vehicle. There are two correct set-ups, and you must know them by heart because they are different.
When stopping (fermata — you step away for a short time and the vehicle can still be watched): engine running, gearbox in neutral, handbrake on. When parking (sosta — you leave the vehicle): engine off, gearbox in first gear, handbrake on.
Questions the examiner may ask
0 / 2Try to answer in your head, then tap the question to reveal the answer.
Engine running, gearbox in neutral (folle), handbrake on.
Engine off, gearbox in first gear, handbrake on.
Common mistake: mixing up the two set-ups. The trick to remember them: when parked the vehicle is left alone, so double safety — gear engaged and handbrake.
Tip: if you park on a slope, also mention turning the wheels towards the kerb (downhill) or towards the road (uphill with a kerb): it is a detail that makes your answer stronger.
