The driving test, explained phase by phase
Review what the examiner will ask you: vehicle checks, manoeuvres and driving in traffic. Each lesson has a video, an explanation and the likely questions — perfect for a last-minute review on your phone.
Preliminary checks
Before you start driving, the examiner will ask you some questions about the vehicle and the documents: these are the so-called "on-board questions" (domande a bordo). You do not need to be a mechanic — you need to show that you know the vehicle you are about to drive.
Manoeuvres
Manoeuvres are the second part of the exam: turning the car round (inversione di marcia) and parking. The examiner does not only check whether the manoeuvre works, but above all how you do it: checks, calm and safety.
Driving in traffic
The longest part of the exam: about twenty minutes of real driving. The examiner checks your road position, right of way, use of mirrors and indicators, and smooth driving — and during the drive you will also do a hill start and be asked to stop.
