The first thing the examiner may ask you about is the documents to keep in the car (documenti da tenere a bordo) and the information written on the vehicle registration document (carta di circolazione).
There are three compulsory documents to keep in the car: your driving licence (patente di guida), the vehicle registration document (carta di circolazione) and the insurance certificate (certificato di assicurazione). They must all be originals, valid and not expired.

Driving licence (patente di guida), vehicle registration document (carta di circolazione) and insurance certificate (certificato di assicurazione). They must all be originals, valid and not expired.
It is the compulsory periodic check of the vehicle, done at the Motorizzazione (the Italian transport office) or at an authorised garage. It checks that the car is safe (brakes, lights, steering, tyres…) and that it respects the limits for exhaust gases and noise. The result is recorded on the registration document (carta di circolazione).
Within the 4th year from first registration and then every 2 years. Example: registered 11 March 2022 → first test by the end of March 2026 → next one by the end of March 2028.
Common mistake: getting confused by the exact day when working out the deadline for the roadworthiness test (revisione). The day does not matter: only the month and year count. Example: vehicle registered on 11 March → the test must be done by the end of March of the year it is due, not by the 11th.
Tip: always keep the three original, valid documents in the car — driving licence, registration document and insurance. It is the first thing the examiner checks.
On the day of the exam remember to bring all your documents with you:
- Identity card (carta d'identità)
- Learner's permit (foglio rosa)
- Driving licence (if you already have one)
- Residence permit (permesso di soggiorno)
